Bing is no longer the search engine you can ignore
If your SEO strategy has been a Google-only strategy, 2026 is the year to change that. Bing now powers Microsoft Copilot, shows up inside ChatGPT search results, and quietly drives a growing share of small-business clicks especially from older buyers, B2B searchers, and anyone using Windows or Edge. The good news? Two of the most useful tools in small-business marketing right now come straight from Microsoft, and they’re both 100% free: Bing Webmaster Tools and Microsoft Clarity. Let’s walk through what each one does, how to set it up, and why your website needs them.
What is Bing Webmaster Tools?
Think of Bing Webmaster Tools as Bing’s version of Google Search Console. It tells you what Bing knows about your website which pages it has indexed, which keywords are sending you traffic, what’s broken, and what to fix. Setting it up takes less than ten minutes and the data starts flowing within a day.
What’s new in 2026
- AI Performance Report. Bing rolled this out in February 2026. It shows how often your content gets cited inside Microsoft Copilot and Bing’s AI-generated answers which URLs are referenced, how citations change over time, and which queries are pulling you in.
- Recommendations. Bing now scans your site and gives you a prioritized to-do list thin content, duplicate title tags, missing meta descriptions, and other quick wins.
- Expanded Search Performance metrics. More detail on crawl requests, crawl errors, and indexed pages, so you can spot problems before they cost you rankings.
How to add Bing Webmaster Tools to your site
- Go to bing.com/webmasters and sign in with a Microsoft account.
- Click “Add a site” or, easier, click “Import from Google Search Console” and let Bing pull yourverified properties over in one click.
- Verify ownership (XML file, meta tag, or DNS record the GSC import skips this step).
- Submit your sitemap (usually yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml).
- Check back in 48 hours your first impressions, click data, and AI Performance report will be ready.
Why this matters for small business: Competition on Bing is dramatically lower than on Google. A page that struggles to crack page 3 on Google can routinely rank on page 1 of Bing and now that Bing powers Copilot and ChatGPT search, those rankings also surface inside AI answers.
What is Microsoft Clarity?
Microsoft Clarity is a free website analytics tool from Microsoft that shows you exactly how real visitors are using your site. Not just pageviews and bounce rates actual heatmaps, scroll maps, and recorded sessions of mouse movement and clicks. It’s the kind of insight that used to cost $300+/month from tools like Hotjar or FullStory. Clarity gives it away for free, with no traffic limits.
What Microsoft Clarity shows you
- Heatmaps. Visual overlays showing where people click, tap, and hover on every page. You see at a glance which buttons get attention and which ones are invisible.
- Scroll maps. How far down the page visitors actually read. If 80% of people never reach the section where you placed your call-to-action, that explains a lot.
- Session recordings. Anonymous video replays of real visitors using your site moving the mouse, scrolling, tapping, filling forms. You watch the experience from their side.
- Rage clicks and dead clicks. Clarity automatically flags moments where someone clicked something repeatedly (frustration) or clicked something that wasn’t actually a link (confusion). These are your highest-ROI fixes.
- AI insights. Clarity now summarizes your data in plain English “Visitors from mobile are abandoning the contact form after the phone-number field” so you don’t need to be an analyst to act on it.
- Funnels and segments. Watch only the sessions that converted, only the sessions that bounced, or only the visitors who came from a specific campaign.
How to add Microsoft Clarity to your website
- Go to clarity.microsoft.com and sign in with a Microsoft, Google, or Facebook account.
- Click “New project,” give it a name, and paste in your website URL.
- Copy the tracking code Clarity gives you.
- Paste it into the <head> section of your website. Most platforms make this easy:
- WordPress: Install the free “Microsoft Clarity” plugin, or paste the code into Appearance → Theme File Editor → header.php (or use Insert Headers and Footers).
- Shopify: Online Store → Themes → Edit Code → theme.liquid → paste before </head>.
- Wix / Squarespace / Webflow: Use the built-in custom code/head injection settings.
- Elementor sites: Use the WPCode or Insert Headers and Footers plugin.
- Wait 2–24 hours. Heatmaps, recordings, and dashboards populate automatically as visitors arrive.
How Clarity actually improves your website
Once data starts flowing, here’s where small businesses see the biggest wins:
- Find the dead spot. If your scroll map shows visitors dropping off before they hit your CTA, move the CTA up. Simple fix, immediate impact on conversions.
- Fix the fake button. Heatmaps show people clicking things that aren’t links (a photo, a headline,an icon). Either turn it into a link or replace it with what they expected.
- Spot the friction. Session recordings of abandoned forms show you exactly which field madepeople quit often the phone number, the date picker, or a long dropdown.
- Validate the design. Before you spend money on a redesign, watch 20 recordings. You will see what’s working before you change it.
- Improve mobile. Filter for mobile sessions only. The story is almost always different from
- desktop, and that’s where most local searches happen.
The bottom line
Bing Webmaster Tools and Microsoft Clarity together give you the two things most small business websites are missing: visibility into how a second major search engine sees you, and visibility into how real humans use your site. Both are free, both take less than thirty minutes to set up, and both compound in value over time.
If you haven’t set them up yet, this week is the week.
